As you review the various hosting options available you will discover, in many cases, long lists of hosting features. Some of these features will be a real benefit for your small business venture. For other features, the benefit might be hard to identify. In this section we will discuss some of the more import aspects of website hosting as they apply to small business websites.

 

Website Content Updates?

Can you add or update the content on your website? Can you add an article and upload a couple of pictures and post it when ever you want? If not is there a charge? What is the turn around time?
If there is no charge and you can do it yourself will they do if for you for a fee? Is it reasonable? What is the turn around time?

 

Will They Update Your Website Content For A Fee If You Want Them To?

If you are busy promoting your business in other ways you might not have the time to update your website content. It might also be possible that you simply don't like to do that sort of thing. Whatever your reason, it's nice to know you have options and know up front what the costs may be.

 

Can You Create Custom Capture Forms? (Turn Cold Calls Into Warm Leads)

Offer your customers a free estimate for your services. With a custom form your website can turn cold calls into warm leads.

Do not underestimate the power of something as simple as a FREE Estimate form to capture customer requests. It may seem obvious to you that your business will provide an estimate. In some cases it's impossible to provide any costing without first estimating the job. And because your customer prospect has not committed to anything of course it's free. So Why state the obvious?

  1. It works. It doesn't have to say FREE or Estimate but it should address their problem.
  2. It allows customers to qualify themselves. Price selections and other options can be used to further qualify your prospect.
  3. Call back preferences can also help ensure your follow up call leads to a sale (or the next logical step in your sales process).

Couple a custom form with Google Adwords and launch a 'measured' advertising campaign to see how it compares financially with your current forms of advertising:

Measured = You decide & control exactly how much you pay on a per click & daily basis

Adwords ads can be served to everyone everywhere or down to specific postal codes, it's your choice, it really depends on what is good for your business.

The Ad could direct the customer to a Custom Free Estimate Form. The customer fills out the form, with their contact information and you are sent an email with this info. You call the customer back and do your thing.

If you like this idea, the next logical question to ask is how much would you be willing to pay for that warm lead sitting in your inbox in the morning? You just answered what you would be willing to pay maximum for a click. You may be able to pay less for the click and still get the results you want. If you are in a very competitive market you may have to pay more. Clicks do not guarantee sales. Someone can click on your ad and then not complete your free estimate form. Or they go through the entire process and simply dislike your estimate for that matter. (more on Adwords later in this discussion)

 

Domain Based Email Accounts

Do you have the option of creating one or more domain based email accounts? If so is there a charge per account or other limitations. Having domain based email offers a more professional & consistent approach. Will it make a difference? It really depends on your customers, you would be in a better position to answer that question.

You can forward email from several accounts into one but you would likely want to go into your domain account to reply. (suppose you forwarded sales@ yourcompany to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., you probably would not want to reply from your hotmail account)

It might not be a bad idea to grab them if they are available, a gmail account is needed for webmaster tools and Google Analytics and Microsoft also has their version of webmaster tools which requires a Microsoft hotmail, live or outlook account.
